The Gaming of Life
Life is just a game, Enjoy it and do not take it too seriously, As the game is temporary. It is played based on the illusion of the time, It is not always based on the truth.

The following content was used during my keynote address to a group of very dedicated and wonderful volunteers at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock (UUCSR), where I am currently President and Chair of the Board of Trustees. This marked my 19th year teaching first graders in our Religious Education Sunday classes. Each year, a teacher is selected to share their Odyssey. I had the honor of being selected in 2012. I believe the following story will provide you with a deeper view of who I am and the journey I have traveled. Each one of us has a story to tell, and every story is inspirational in its own way. I encourage you to share your story any way you can – whether written in a journal for your eyes only, or spoken publicly, among small groups of friends or large audiences. Sharing your story is a way to strengthen your identity and liberate your spirit.

Journal writing is a key component to how I express and share my feelings with fellow human beings who may have similar thoughts, but cannot see them clearly. Putting our thoughts on paper enables us to visualize them, to feel them. I believe it is an important way to activate our internal healing processes.

My name is Nancy Shui Yuan Chen Kerr Perez Baldwin. That’s a mouthful. What a name, what a life, and what a journey. I don’t know about you, but I like to know people by their full names. It gives me a sense of emotional connection with the person I am about to meet. A name is not just a label, but the start of a life journey. I know we don’t always like the birth names we were given. We had no control over the love and joy of our parents when they selected the names for us. Like it or not, that’s where it all began. That was the beginning of our identity. Moreover, we may add or subtract parts of our names along the way, based on our life experiences: our names become the bases of our individual, unique stories.

Who is the Superhero in you? What do you want from this new scope of possibility? How will your Superhero guide you there? My Superhero is Captain Misty Blue. He is the pillar of my universe. He provides me with unlimited space to explore the mystery of life, with all the possibilities present between heaven and the deep blue sea. He is the champion of my journey to advance my purpose in life. He reflects what is and what is not about my being. He navigates me through the turbulent waters of the past and links the relevance of those experiences with the present. He paves the road of exploration for a future that is yet to come.

When a close working colleague took his own life last November, it was a wakeup call for me to pay attention to the effects and implications of transitions on individuals. I recalled one of the conversations I had with this colleague upon his re-entry to a lower level corporate job three years after he retired from a very senior position in a big company. The discussion regarded important decision making. His comment to me was, “I had to make a very important decision this past Saturday – do I make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, or do I made macaroni and cheese for my grandson’s lunch?” The comment was thoughtful, yet the sadness in his eyes and lackluster in his voice told me another story. He was depressed. The joy of being a grandfather in a new life setting could not be appreciated in this case. His transition between the two lives was not properly prepared for nor bridged.
